Boston's Children's Hospital reaches out to Hispanics

Children's ratchets up Latino outreach
By Kate Hoffman, Boston Business Journal, August 7, 2009

Children’s Hospital Boston is making a concerted effort to reach out to Latino families, which comprise 33 percent of its patient base.

Case in point: The Milagros Para Niño fundraiser was recently organized by the hospital to educate and spread awareness about general health care issues within the Latino community.

The effort included a two-day radiothon that began July 31 as well as a Children’s Hospital Boston Day at Canobie Lake Park in Salem, N.H. The Children’s Hospital Trust, the hospital’s philanthropic arm, also enlisted Latino celebrities to do public service announcements featuring David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox and international pop star Enrique Ingelsias, among others.

Proceeds from the different fundraisers go towards areas of greatest need within the hospital, such as research and community health. A hospital spokeswoman said the fundraising effort did not have a specific monetary goal, but rather was intended to commence a dialogue between the hospital and this growing patient population.

She did not have specific information pertaining to specific amounts raised.
